the manx cat

The manx cat are essential for breeding purposes as tailless manx cats will encounter genetic problems if they are bred for more than 3 generations. There are many tales regarding the arrival of manx cats which date back as far as the 1600s. It is generally accepted that the isle of man became a refuge for shipwrecked manx cats from ships of the spanish armada that had been sunk nearby. Manx cats are a lot heavier than a lot of breeds: they have a compact body, wide chest, large bones and a dense double long or short coat of fur which all attribute to their 8-12lbs average weight. The standard weight for a male manx cat is somewhere between 10-12lbs and females are slightly lighter at 8-10lbs. Manx cats have round eyes and a distinctive ear-set. They have broad ears that taper to narrow, rounded tips – this is the general accepted ear shape regardless of whether you own a show quality manx cat or an ordinary manx cat.

The manx cat are variable andrange from spina bifida to sacrococcygeal dysgenesis. Spinalcord deformities can include meningocele, meningomyelocele, syringomyelia, spinal dysraphism, and disorganization andinfiltration with fibrous tissue (figs. ) other congenital abnormalitiesinclude sacralization of the last lumbar vertebra, which causesclinical signs, and eighth lumbar vertebra, which isasymptomatic (. Spondylolisthesis is a ventral displacement of a caudal vertebrain relation to the next cranial one. Ventral displacement of thesacrum occurs in large breed dogs, such as the german shepherd, boxer, and hunting breeds and may be associated with instabilityof the lumbosacral articulation. Clinical signs are usuallyinapparent until middle age when secondary changes result fromthe altered biomechanical forces (.

The manx cat are similar to those of domestic cats, including spots of black and brown. All blacks and all whites are common among manx as well. Despite the lack of tail, the manx's sense of balance is not sacrificed, as well as its ability to express its emotions without a tail to swish. The manx cat is intelligent, even-tempered, and adaptable, forming strong bonds of love and trust with its chosen humans. Although it usually choose one person, it gets along well with other family members, including children, other cats, and even dogs. It also has a fascination for water, possibly from all those years surrounded by it on the isle of man. The manx is also an exceptional jumper, thanks to its strong hind legs.

Johnson, dvm (assistant veterinary specialist- university animal care, university of arizona, tucson) write ". Spina bifida: the spontaneous occurrence of this condition in the manx cat has been offered by many investigators as a model through which to study the similar condition in humans. Detectable amounts of a-foetal protein in amniotic fluid have been reported in human pregnancies with neural tube defects. Similar detection has been verified in the manx cat with neural tube anomalies. The clinical syndrome varies and can include megacolon, urinary incontinence with secondary predisposition to urinary infection, locomotor disorders, uterine inertia and chronic cystitis, along with the wide variety of bony anomalies. It appears to be an autosomal dominant trait with incomplete penetrance. The near absence of hydrocephalus and other cns lesions in the cat model dims total homology, but this is the best known and most homologous model to date.
